Yamila "Yams" Emanuel
Academic Background: B.S. in Biology on a Pre-Med track from William Peace University, I am a certified phlebotomist, and am currently in the process of becoming a registered behavior technician.
City: I was born in New Haven, Connecticut. But I grew up in Brooklyn, New York City.
Public Health Interests: I am interested in infectious diseases especially among the pediatric population. I have a strong passion for working with kids and when viruses or diseases hit communities kids are typically the front line on who gets hit first. As an aspiring pediatrician, I believe there are a variety of qualities that contribute to being a doctor and public health is definitely one of them.
Public Health Experience: During my time in undergrad I served as a research assistant from 2021-2023 for the UNC School of Medicine. Our main focus was analyzing environmental and social factors that impacted kids under the age of 5 and their cognitive development. These particular kids all fell on the spectrum, so every child had a unique way of reacting to a variety of environmental stimuli. This time allowed me to see the variety of outside factors that contribute to a child’s development in a variety of aspects in their life.
Why I chose the MPH program at UNC Charlotte: I chose UNC Charlotte because I wanted to get back to being in the city after being in Raleigh for 4 years. UNC Charlotte also has a very diverse population which allows to get the best experience, especially in the public health field. I love giving back to communities and helping those specifically in low-income populations.
More About Me: I am a huge foodie. I played professional basketball in undergrad. I am fluent in French.
