MPH graduate named Resiliency Fellow for Charlotte City Manager’s Office

On behalf of the Department of Public Health Science, we’d like to congratulate Alexandra (Alex) Alcorn, MPH ’18, on her new position as Resilience Fellow at the Charlotte City Manager’s Office.

If her name sounds familiar it’s because Alex is no stranger to hard work and success. She was the recipient of the Arrington Award during her time at UNC Charlotte. The Arrington Award is a scholarship in honor of the late Donna C. Arrington for public health graduate students who are “destined to become tomorrow’s public health leaders working for social justice.” Alex also served as the President of the Graduate Public Health Association for the 2017-2018 year and volunteered as a domestic violence advocate with Atrium Health’s Domestic Violence Healthcare Project. She was also a project manager for Healthy Wells, a project devoted to improving the monitoring of private wells in Gaston County.

In her new role in the City Manager’s Office, Alex will be focusing on improving Charlotte’s ability to respond to current and future shocks and stresses. She will apply the lens of resiliency to projects throughout the city, including the Solid Waste Services Innovation Lab and the Comprehensive Plan 2040. Her goal as a Resiliency Fellow is to address environmental, economic and social challenges through a holistic approach, amplifying community assets and transcending sectors.

Alex graduated from the MPH program with her concentration in Community Health Practice in May 2018. She focused her studies and professional work on environmental health and public policy. She is currently enrolled in the Certificate in Urban Management and Policy program at UNC Charlotte.
