MPH Student Wins Donna C. Arrington Scholarship

MPH student Alexandra (Alex) Alcorn has been awarded the Donna C. Arrington Scholarship for the coming academic year. Alex is a second year MPH student interested in environmental health. For summer 2017, she is completing an internship with Clean Air Carolina. In Fall 2016, Alex was the representative of El Salvador at the Regional Mock WHO Conference at UNC Chapel Hill. In January 2017, she represented UNC Charlotte for The Washington Center’s Presidential Inauguration Academic Seminar in Washington D.C.

Prior to moving to Charlotte, she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota in Biology and Spanish. She worked at the Brain Sciences Center at the University as a research assistant, helping to evaluate PTSD and TBI in U.S. veterans. She also worked as a program coordinator at the People’s Medical Clinic in Minneapolis where she planned and implemented a weekly yoga class in an underserved neighborhood populated primarily by east African refugees. In both Minneapolis and Charlotte, Alex has worked as a Domestic Violence Advocate. She has been a Bilingual Science Educator at Harding University High School in Charlotte.

The Donna C. Arrington scholarship was created in honor the late Ms. Arrington by a network of family, friends, and colleagues. Ms. Arrington’s career was distinguished by tireless work in the Peace Corps, at the United Way, and as the Senior Director of the Regional HIV/AIDS Consortium. She was known in our community for her ability to help others think outside the box to find middle ground. Her empathy, compassion and intellect were manifested in relationship building.
